Cycling the Underground Railroad--Part 2

DAY 8: CINCINNATI TO WAYNESVILLE, OH

The rail-trail I was riding today was a line of the Pennsylvania Railroad until 1974.

It was a bit sad as I rode away.from the family I had spent almost two very wonderful days with, but I'll see them again in 10 days as I ride up to Michigan.

"Moving me down the highway..."

After 13 miles of climbing a few hills to exit the city toward the east, I once again intersected the Little Miami Scenic Trail.  This multi-use, paved,  almost level path roughly follows the winding Little Miami River for over 50 miles.

Being that it was Saturday morning, initially the trail was filled with walkers, runners and bikets.  I rode up next to a cyclist who made me an offer. 

"If you're going to Loveland (about 10 miles up the road), I'll buy you a drink to learn about your journey." 

The fact that my bike was loaded with gear is a giveaway that I'm riding to somewhere as opposed to "out riding." John and I rode side by side when traffic permitted, getting acquainted as we pedaled.  In Loveland we pulled into "The Wicked Pickle" for some nourishment.

John resides in Mariemont, near the trail and close to where he grew up.  But he's lived in a number of different states.  Like me, he is now retired.  Over lunch we had a delightful conversation around family, work, retirement and (of course) cycling.  I thoroughly enjoyed his company, and hope we stay in touch!

The trail was delightful.  After the challenging terrain of Alabama,  Mississippi, Tennessee. Kentucky and parts of southern Indiana and Ohio, today was a welcomed change.
At times I could clearly see the trail's namesake. 

This hard-surfaced rail-trail felt like a bicycle super highway.

As I arrived at my destination of Waynesville,  the village was engaged in a street fair that I sensed was going to be going on tomorrow as well.  I'll check it out on.my way out of town.

Along some of our route this morning we saw these signs.  I never saw any Underground Railroad signposts (except once on the Little Miami Trailnear Milford, OH) in the 2,000 miles I cycled on it in the United States! Our morning  "adventure." The detour took us on several miles of gravel roads, which we managed to navigate successfully.  Harvest season in Ontario! The highlight of our day.  An excellent exhibit, including a short video, interpretive displays, outstanding guided tour and restored 19th century buildings. The Dawn settlement (now the town of Dresden, Ontario) was founded by Josiah Henson for the purpose of educating and training those who escaped slavery in the U.S.  Ontario had outlawed slavery in 1793. Josiah Henson was the inspiration for Uncle Tom in Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin (which was the most read book besides the Bible in the 1800s). Cycling the Underground Railroad--Day 1

DAY 1: MOBILE, ALABAMA After a 2 hour car ride from Prescott to Phoenix (starting at 8am), almost 5 hours on three different flights, and two Uber rides of 30+ minutes each, I finally arrived at my motel, the (not so) Quality Inn, around 10:30pm.  That's a long time to wear a mask...just sayin'. I met some interesting people.  Ginger from Dallas is a chiropractor who owns a business which manufactures and distributes restorative medicine for horses, and was interested in this ride.  She and her husband did a 100 mile bicycle fundraiser in Ireland.  Omar, my Houston Uber driver, writes theology books (you can check him out, Omar V. Gearty, on Amazon).  Beth, who was on her way to Mobile on my flight, is a hospital chaplain who is doing a Kindness Rock project with her hospital staff.  (I shared one of Carolyn's Kindness Rocks with her).
